Take home a piece of history & leave with a wet plate collodion tintype. Get your portrait taken on-site at the Link Gallery in Omaha, NE.

Invented in 1851, the wet plate collodion process quickly became the first commercially successful photographic process.

Husband and wife, Adam & Anne Dienst-Scott, continue to recreate this historical photographic process through their tintype portrait studio at Link Gallery+ Workshop. They produce beautiful, one-of-a-kind portraits rendered in pure metallic silver on a metal plate.

Can’t make it to the studio? They also have a mobile setup and can bring the process to you.

    8x10 tintype- $150/plate or $275 for two

  • We do drop-in sessions on the first Friday of every month, during our artist exhibitions. If you would like a private session, please email us to schedule. We ask that you schedule 2 weeks out to ensure that we have enough chemistry. We do require a $25 deposit for private sessions.

  • A $25 deposit will be due before a session is officially confirmed. We ask that this is done 2 weeks prior to ensure we have the correct amount of chemistry. The remaining cost will be due at the end of your session.

  • Your session is not guaranteed until we contact you to confirm availability and receive your $25 deposit.

  • For one plate, plan on 45 minutes, start to finish, for a typical portrait session. If you have two plates or more taken, plan on one hour and a half.

  • We know it can be difficult (stressful!) to get in front of a camera. Try and relax. Ask a lot of questions. Tell us what kind of music you would like to listen to…

You will get to experience the process of creating a tintype portrait, from camera flash to fixing (the final stage of development) where you will see the image magically appear before your eyes. While you wait for the processing to finish and for us to varnish the plate, you are invited to look around the gallery, or see what the Historic Blackstone District has to offer. We suggest grabbing some ice cream from Coneflower Creamery while you wait!

  • We can shoot 2 (maybe 3) people. This is because the depth of field is very shallow and small and because the process requires a tremendous amount of lighting. This also means most of the photos we shoot in studio are usually torso length/head-shots.

If you would like a larger group we can arrange to do an onsite session for an additional cost.

  • The below guidelines are only suggestions, feel free to be you and wear what you want!

    For Your Shoot:

Textures and prints look great in this process! The more contrast in your garment, the better. Layered clothing also looks nice. Jewelry also captures the light really well.

Because the process is more sensitive to UV light- freckles, sunspots, and scars are more pronounced, this is what gives the tintype that unique look. However, if you plan on wearing makeup, we recommend applying it a little heavier than normal since this process is highly detailed- mascara really makes the eyes stand out.

    Things to Avoid:

Because the tintype is a mirror image, avoid clothing with logos or any sort of lettering as they will appear backward in the final photograph.

Do not use makeup that has UV blockers (or sunscreen) in it as it will make you appear lighter.

Anything red will appear black. Blue will look white/light gray in color. So, wearing a shirt with a black and red pattern (plaid), will mostly look black and wearing a blue shirt with white details will look mostly white.

  • We usually take two images and you choose the one you wish to keep. Each tintype is prepared on site in the darkroom. Once the plate has been sensitized it is loaded into the camera, the flash goes off, and the plate is immediately processed in the darkroom. The resulting image is actual metallic silver left on the plate ofter development. No editing or “fixing in Photoshop,” This one-of-a-kind image is what you take home!

  • Yes. Although each image is carefully prepared, this is an imperfect process. Due to the nature of the chemistry and everything being hand prepared, “artifacts” are common with tintypes. It is wet collodion’s unpredictable nature that gives the tintype process that unique look.

  • We will re-shoot at no extra cost if:

There is a chemical issue which affects the final quality of the image.

We really screw up during shooting/processing… it happens.

Other than that, if you are really particular, we can re-shoot for an additional $10 fee (per plate) to cover the additional material costs and time.

  • Some things to consider :

They do not care for the strobe light and get upset when it goes off.

The process requires the sitter to be completely still for exposure, and as you may know, they sometimes have trouble sitting still making them blurry in the final image. So, if they can’t sit still, you will still be charged the full amount due to time and chemicals involved.

  • YES! We have a mobile darkroom so we can bring the process to you. Email us at linkgallery.omaha@gmail.com to discuss rates.

  • Yes, with permission. Like most photographers, we have licensing fees for commercial usage. These fees vary depending on the use of the image. Contact us to discuss rates.

  • We require a $25 deposit, that will be applied to the total cost for private, scheduled appointment.

If you need to reschedule, it REQUIRES 24 HOURS NOTICE. If you notify us less than 24 hours from your scheduled appointment, you will forfeit the deposit amount and will need to make another $25 deposit to reschedule. We understand things happen, but this process requires a certain amount of preparation and set up. Once mixed, some of the chemistry has to be used or be thrown out- if it is thrown out due to cancellation it is a financial loss for our studio. If something happens please notify us. The more we know the better it is for the both of us. Due to the nature of this process and the chemicals, equipment and time involved, WE DON’T OFFER REFUNDS.
