As a commentary on today’s healthcare system through the lens of gendered medical disparities, Birkeland's self-portraits illustrate the introspection surrounding her experience fighting for and undergoing an elective hysterectomy. Treading the line between empowerment and grief, "Negative Space" lays bare the weight of expectation and serves as a visual proclamation that womanhood is not defined by one’s ability to bear children, but rather by resilience, the capacity for choice, and a collective power to redefine the narrative.
