In 2017, Katie Goossen was met with an unavoidable life-altering experience, a boy she trusted and loved very dearly at the time, sexually assaulted her for many months. It wasn’t until years later did Goossen realize what he had done and by that time, it was too late to forgive and forget. To let out her anger and frustration, Goossen turned to her photography. With each photograph life seemed easier and simpler, but Goossen always felt something was missing in her practice.
Goossen’s fascination with photographing herself comes from a failed career as a model. She had dreamed of becoming well-known in the industry, but the company that she studied under didn’t fit quite right. To add to her portfolio for modeling, Goossen took liberty to take some of her own photographs; sadly, her mentor did not approve. This phenomenon lead Goossen to photograph herself, as a way to prove herself. Over time the spite slowly faded, but the strive to make new pieces never left.
With her photography, Goossen has created a safe space, not only for her but also for her viewers.
